The Tougaloo College Archives and Research Center is the key component of Tougaloo College’s planned large-scale development intended to preserve Mississippi history on Tougaloo’s historic campus.
The Tougaloo College Archives and Research Center will house the nationally significant archival materials from the civil rights era across the state and region centered in Mississippi and at Tougaloo College. The project will draw scholars from a range of contexts, including current students enrolled in the college as well as exchange students from around the world and more seasoned learners.
The proposed archives and research center is in keeping with the National Archives mission to inspire a deeper appreciation of our country’s legacy and to encourage citizen engagement in our democracy. Given the historical significance of Tougaloo College during the civil rights movement and its vast collection of national historic significance, it is a perfect home for this special need.
The center will contain archival information consistent with the focus on the following activities authorized in the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) statute: collecting, describing, preserving, compiling, and publishing (including microfilming and other forms of reproduction) documentary sources significant to the history of the United States, with the civil rights era at Tougaloo College being a central focus of our nation’s civil rights history. The center will also provide space for institutional training and educational programs, where Tougaloo’s digital archiving will be available to the public as part of a major project to educate and bring historical awareness.
