Tougaloo College, in collaboration with The Episcopal Church, plans to develop a Center for Racial Justice and Equity inspired by world-class sites, and combine academic research with community engagement for the purpose of drawing students and mature scholars together to effect substantive change toward the vision of a more just society. The project will draw scholars from a range of contexts, including current students enrolled in the college as well as exchange students from around the world and more seasoned learners.
The project highlights and strengthens Tougaloo’s longstanding role as a convener of thought leaders in the field of social justice and racial equity. Leveraging strong existing networks with other colleges and universities, including HBCUs, the Center will have impact locally in the Southern region, nationally, and globally. In addition, the project will address justice related needs and issues in the geographic location of the Center, as a tangible means of putting theory into practice through impactful community engagement.
The history and foundations of Tougaloo – the place and the institution – have forged a unique set of values. The history of inequity and a conviction for remedy through education and service both inform the values of Tougaloo College and serve as its foundation. The Tougaloo Center for Racial Justice and Equity is composed of five intertwined components that build on and expand Tougaloo College’s educational goals and justice-focused reach to the local and national community.
