The Jackson Free Clinic (JFC) is a non-profit healthcare facility run by medical students at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as volunteer physicians from the local community. The clinic is located in the heart of Jackson, MS, and is dedicated to providing completely free medical, dental, and psychiatric care to the city’s most underserved citizens. Currently located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Carnes Street, JFC seeks to expand to better serve its growing patient base. Duvall Decker has been commissioned to design and construct a new 2,255 SF clinic addition, which will include three new exam rooms, a space for social health to meet with patients, a vision care room, a rehab space, and a flex space designed to accommodate physician-student interactions and future growth.
The new durable and economical patterned metal skin building will be efficient and dignified with attention being paid to making spaces that ease the stress of health care experiences. The new one-story building’s structure will be composed of an exposed steel frame with wood framing infill and roof structure. The main corridor will be illuminated by a rectangular light well with both north and south-facing windows, ensuring abundant natural light and an awareness of changes in seasons and the cycles of the day.
